RUMOR: That UK-based television show about cars I like just finished a segment in which they acquired a Toyota Prius and removed its Achilles heel. People who seem to know about these things say the problem with gas-electric hybrid vehicles is that the batteries and the electric propulsion system weigh down the vehicle, especially at speed.

The question becomes whether the Prius would achieve greater fuel efficiency with the electric engine absorbing the impact of take off, or without the electric system at all. Evidently some pretty bright guys had to be rounded up to remove the electric propulsion and batteries from a Prius without rendering it useless.

The short version is may be that the infamous Toyota is actually more efficient as a pure ICE vehicle than the form in which it is delivered from the factory. The nature of the tests to which it was subjected remain mysterious.
