At this hour this is rumor.

Monday, 30 October, 2006

The word is going out that Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip has been cancelled. Nothing official, yet. However, this rumor has some merit since NBC has ordered merely three more, instead of seven or nine, making a total of sixteen episodes which is a magic number for international distribution. With this news, timed as it is, this will give the show the opportunity to provide “wrap up” and allow Aaron to finish the piece.

Studio 60 is being pre-empted tonight, but this was part of the long-term schedule months ago. However, I will add to the rumor mill by stating that spreading the rumor of the show’s cancellation on the night of its first pre-emption may serve to test the demo. Do they care? Will anybody write in?

While not the best case scenario, it will make a hell of a DVD set. That is, one sixteen-hour movie superficially about the nature and promise of television and the kind of people who make it. Frankly, as accessible as it is, it’s too good for American network television. If the characters were European and writing a show for a fictional network operating out of London with only the most superficial changes it would be regarded as brilliant by the fans of Are You Being Served?.

and they should have gone with “UBS”.

EDIT: The vast majority of the commentary on this issue appears to either celebrate or lament the passing of Tina Fey’s 30 Rock, the continuation of which is not in question … as far as I know.
