The Stones, no not Fred and Barney even though I loved that joke, are playing Zilker Park some time this year on their upcoming tour. No one mentioned this within the context that struck me most. Isn’t that an unusual venue for that kind of touring show? I can only imagine the preparations which would be insisted upon.

You think ACL fest is a nightmare? Oh, brother.

Now this headline crosses my desktop: Rolling Stones Will Play Churchill Downs

The world’s largest one-band, touring rock-and-roll show is playing a number of unusual venues this time around. Calling up a list of announced dates we get these interesting entries:

  • 23 September, Halifax NS, Halifax Commons, a large, urban, public park not unlike Austin’s Zilker Park
  • 29 September, Louisville KY, Churchill Downs, a large, centrally located horse-racing track … which happens to be in a particularly bad neighborhood these days.
  • 01 October, Wichita KS (pop. 584,671 MSA), Wichita State University Venue not specified.
  • 04 October, Missoula MT (pop. 57,053), Grizzly Stadium
  • 06 & 08 October, Regina SK (pop. 178,225), Taylor Field, home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, CFL
  • 22 October, Austin TX, Zilker Park

Smaller towns, not so much population centers or very unusual venues … but not attached to CCC promotions? Yes? Because Drudge is pushing the opposite idea, I’m going to assume it’s working out just fine for the Dixies. RS could put a spike in the coffin of traditional promotion.

Let’s hope it works.
