Curiosity got the best of me. I was wondering what the insurance costs on a small motorcycle would be for someone like me. I ran several models and zip codes through Progressive’s quote engine. Evidently it doesn’t matter what zip code I live in (Wells Branch, ’04, Hyde Park and Georgetown) the only thing which matters is the type of cycle and engine displacement. Any under-500cc motorcycle, with “comprehensive and collision”, is $200 every six months. However, anything considered a scooter is $332 every six months. That’s a pretty big gap.

Mind you, my auto insurance wound up being about 50% of Progressive’s quote. That goes for Geico, too. Still, that’s a pretty big jump. So would it be worth throwing away $132 per year for a certain level of coolness, functionality and losing interstate ability?

If I were actually shopping I’d do more research. These numbers may be misleading.
